What the heck does “squeeze your abs mean?”


hi good morning maybe it’s not morning
when you’re watching me this morning here in Austin it’s gonna be a beautiful
day in July morning is the time to go outside in July in Austin Texas for sure
listening to the birds and enjoying a nice easy abdominal workout this morning
so I wanted to talk through what your instructor or your trainer means when
they say squeeze your abs because we’ve talked before about how the abdominal
walls like can go in different directions and it couldn’t service me
sometimes that you know most instructors and trainers through natural core
engagers they naturally pull up an end they already like they feel that and
they don’t know that other people don’t so you only know what you know right but
I know that there are people that engage inward and there are people that engage
outward and there are people that try to squeeze their sides together which can
push it outward as well so basically if you’re squeezing inward it looks like
this if you’re pushing outward let’s see if I can do it it looks like that and so
by pushing outward they’re causing the muscles to grow outward and again if
you’re squeezing the sides together it sort of pushes that rectus abdominus
outward as well so when your instructor says squeeze your abs what she’s saying
is engage your abdominals up and in so the big difference would be you know
where you’re just kind of hanging out see if I can just hang out if I teach my
people to engage all the time so hanging out is hard for me okay so if you’re
just hanging out what you want to do is zip up the front body pull the navel up
in the end like you zipped up something one size too tight and the back body is
important too because a lot of times our back body goes like this
and I want you to just lengthen the back body it doesn’t mean that your spine
becomes stick straight it means that you’re lengthening and pressing down to
the base of your spine and up to the top of your spine which helps you pull this
up and in as well so think up and in not squeeze together so that makes sense and
also squeeze together can look like this and that doesn’t that’s not helpful
so nice and tall with a good posture pulling up and in and that goes for
standing up lying down whatever wherever when they when
actually in life life lesson engage your abdominals by pulling it up and in in
any movement that you’re doing all day long
believe me you get used to it believe me you get used to it
if it’s hard for me to not do it then I know that it’s it becomes part of just
how you maintain your body just what you do if you have questions on that let me
know but I know the beginning is hard so I teach a lot of people from the very
beginning of this process people that are not naturally core engagers or
they’re injured or they they want to push out or whatever it’s like part of
our mechanism habit for whatever reason and and teaching that beginning is the
work like that is the hardest part getting the alignment correct breathing
into your actual lungs that live under your ribcage and being able to pull this
up and in like it’s hard work for the first couple of weeks the back starts
getting tired right because I’ve asked them to get their shoulder back where it
supposed to be which is harder on this muscle this muscle is having to pull up
it in all the time this muscle is pressing down in the cycle why am i sore
just from holding my body up because you’re holding your skeleton in a
different way than the way that you were before and it’s a change it’s a muscular
change but when you change that everything changes the way that you
exercise changes the way that you function and daily life changes the way
that you look changes the way that you feel the way that you breathe changes
and it’s for the better trust me I haven’t worked with anybody
that said oh gosh I really want to go back to my rounded slumpy position or I
really want to hurt my lower back and dump into it okay so trust me on that
